33rd Pacem in Maribus Phase2 held in SMU
From September 5 to 8, 33rd Pacem in Maribus Phase2 organized by International Ocean Institute (IOI) and Shanghai Maritime University was grandly held. The theme for this conference was "THE FUTURE CHALLENGES TO COASTAL CITIES". Over 70 domestic and foreign experts, representatives of IOI Operation Centers across the world as well as SMU teaching members attended this conference.
On September 6, the opening ceremony was held in SMU Lingang new campus. Dr. Awni Behnam, President of International Ocean Institute and UN Commissioner General for Shanghai World Expo, Ambassador Patrick Van Klaveren, representative of Prince of Monaco, Dr. Iouri Oliounine from UNESCO, Dr. Zhanhai Zhang, Director-General, Department of International Cooperation, State Oceanic Administration and SMU President Yu Shicheng attended the ceremony.
During the opening ceremony, President Yu Shicheng spoke highly of the contributions made for a long time by IOI on deepening understanding for the ocean and promoting sustainable marine development. He said that it is a good wish of people of all countries to develop and utilize marine resources in a rational and friendly way and to protect the marine environment. SMU will further endeavor to develop the ocean scientific research, spread the ocean culture and contribute to training talents.
Dr. Awni Behnam expressed his sincerest thanks for all SMU has done for local organization of this conference. And he further hoped that through this conference, SMU would find the potential collaborative partners of various countries and regions.
On the following workshops, experts exchanged views and discussed deeply on future challenges of the coastal cities. On Sep.7th, the conference continued in UN Pavilion of Shanghai World Expo, hosted by Dr. Behnam.
PIM Phase1 was held in Beijing. China Vice Premier of the State Council, Mr. Li Keqiang met with the participants in the Great Hall of the People. Prof. Jin Yongxing attended the PhaseⅠconference in Beijing.
