Captain Gu Weiguo Successfully Accomplished the Convoy Task And Returned with Chinese 12th Navy Convoy Fleet

Appointed by the Ministry of Transport, PRC, Captain Gu Weiguo from Merchant Marine College of Shanghai Maritime University went to Gulf of Aden and waters off the Somali together with Chinese 12th Navy Convoy Fleet on July 3th, 2012 for the convoy task. They initiated their sailing from a military harbor in Zhejiang Province. Captain Gu Weiguo was mainly responsible for communicating with and contacting the Chinese and the foreign merchant ships under protection, and organizing and guiding the meeting and teaming of the merchant ships passing by so as to guarantee the smooth contact between the merchant ships and the naval ships and to build up an efficient channel between the Ministry of Transport and the navy, as well as between the merchant ships and the naval ships. On January 19th, 2013 the Chinese 12th Navy Convoy Fleet successfully accomplished the escort task and returned to the military harbor in Zhejiang Province.

On January 16th, the Chief Officer of Chinese 12th Navy Convoy Fleet wrote a letter of thanks to SMU, in which he not only expressed his sincere gratitude to SMU for sending Captain Gu Weiguo to accomplish the convoy task, but also extended his high respect to Captain Gu Weiguo for his outstanding contribution to the successful accomplishment of the task in the past six months.

Captain Gu Weiguo is a senior captain with rich nautical experience, excellent English and the Certificate of Competency for Captain of Ocean-going Vessels (A Class). He is the second captain who has taken part in the convoy task after Captain Wu Huiguo, who had joined Chinese 5th Navy Convoy Fleet.

On January 23, the Liberation Daily Group, Wen Hui Pao, Xinmin Evening News, Xinmin Morning News etc. all interviewed Captain Gu Weiguo. Many news websites reprinted the interview.
