It was an important event of 2014 “Shanghai Spring” International Music Festival, in which over 100 bands were invited to participate. As the only band from Shanghai universities in the final match, SMU Orchestra, led by Mz. Ma Hua, won silver medal.

Shanghai Spring International Music Festival was jointly hosted by Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, Shanghai Education Commission, Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV and Chinese Musicians Association. It was the highest level of orchestra competition in China. More than 20 well-known conductors from home and abroad were invited as the judges, such as Fanbi Baird, famous French conductor, Yu Hai, chief conductor of Military Orchestra of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Chen Dan and Wang Hesheng, both outstanding composers, Bian Zushan, first-grade conductor of national orchestra, and Zhang Guoyong, dean of the department of conducting of Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

SMU Orchestra played the Celebration Symphony and King Arthur. Both were difficult and new heroic epics. Teachers and students from the SMU Orchestra worked closely together, making full use of their spare time to practice, and finally achieved a great success.
