International Symposium for Polar Navigation Technology and Model Course Held in Shanghai

The International Symposium for Polar Navigation Technology and Model Course was recently held at Shanghai Pudong International Shipping Service Center. The symposium was hosted by Merchant Marine College, SMU, and jointly organized by IAMU Project “Model Course for Navigation in Polar Waters”, DNSAMOT (Donghai Navigation Safety Administration, Ministry of Transport) and TPM (Shanghai) Marine Engineering Co., LTD.

At the symposium, Prof. Jin Yongxing, Vice President of SMU, and Mr. Liu Jiahua, Deputy Director of DNSAMOT, gave welcome speeches. Prof. Hu Qinyou, Associate Dean of Merchant Marine College, SMU, hosted the symposium. Among all the participants, there were also Prof. Adam Weintrit, Dean of Faculty of Navigation, GMU (Gdynia Maritime University), Prof. Nikitas Nikitakos from Department of STT (Shipping, Trade, and Transport), UA (University of the Aegean), Mr. Wu Yuxiao, Assistant to Director of Hydrographic Center of DNSAMOT, Mr. Hu Jusheng, Director of Safety Management Department of China Shipping (Group) Company, Mr. Wu Jusheng, Director of Maritime Strategy Development Department, DNV (Greater China Region), Dr. Ding Shifeng from China Classification Society, Dr. Mao Xiuyin from TPM (Shanghai) Marine Engineering Co., Mr. Ruan Wei, Dean of Continuing Education College, SMU, Prof. Hu Qinyou and Associate Prof. Xi Yongtao from Merchant Marine College, SMU.

Given the melting of north polar ice, the arctic route becomes more and more strategic. China could optimize its energy transport structure and enhance energy security with the development of the arctic route. This symposium aimed at elevating talents cultivation of polar navigation technology through international cooperation in science and technology as well as strengthening China’s participation in international research projects so as to promote China’s international influence.
