Mr. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of SMU Council, Attended the Opening Ceremony of the Regional Training Course for Maritime English Instructors
2017-11-16

From October 30th to November 3rd, a regional training course for Maritime English Instructors was held in Shanghai. Thirty trainees and representatives from China, Korea, India, Mongolia, Burma, Korea, Sri Lanka and other countries attended this training. Mr. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of SMU Council, Mr. Chang Fuzhi, Inspector of Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, Mr. Milhar Fuazudeen, Head of Maritime Training and Human Element section of IMO, and Mr. Clive Cole, Honorary Secretary of the International Maritime Lecturers' Association, attended the opening ceremony.

Mr. Jin Yongxing delivered a welcome speech on behalf of SMU. He said that as an important member of China's maritime education and training, SMU has always attached great importance to participating in the international maritime affairs and also accumulated valuable experience. Last year, IMO formally declared SMU to be the organizer of Maritime Technology Cooperation Center for Asia (MTCC Asia), and SMU welcome all the guests to pay more attention to MTCC Asia and participate in kinds of activities held by MTCC-Asia in the future. SMU will do its best to provide support for this training course, hoping that all trainees could exchange ideas adequately and gain enough knowledge from this program.

Mr. Chang Fuzhi extended a warm welcome to all the students on behalf of Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration. He said, the most important thing for non-English speaking countries is to fully understand the International Convention, which is also the purpose of this training course. We believe that, through this training, teachers can get the teaching skills to train more excellent sailing students in the near future.

Mr. Milhar Fuazudeen made a comprehensive exposition on the origin and significance of this training course, so that trainees could fully realize the significance of this training.

On the basis of IMO teaching standard course Nautical English, which was revised by SMU in 2015, this training aimed to updating Maritime English Instructors' competence and skills from parties of STCW Convention, promoting effective communication among seafarers, and enhancing mutual understanding and common development.

This training course is organized by IMO and SMU and jointly hosted by the Merchant Marine College of SMU, China International Maritime Research Center, International Maritime Lecturers’ Association and MTCC Asia.
