Academic Lecture: The Paradoxes of Bible Translations by Women: Feminist Interventions in Misogynist Text
2015-10-29
Time: 1:30-3:00pm, Oct. 30th, 2015
Venue: Room 124, College of Foreign Languages
Speaker: Luise von Flotow, Ottawa University
Abstract: This presentation focuses on interventionist action in Bible translation by women: Julia Smith 1855, Elizabeth Cady Stanton 1895, and MaryPhil Korsak 1992. It underlines the fact that the history of Bible translation has led to Western notions of "fidelity in translation" and juxtaposes this with these women translators' attempts to intervene in an ancient text which in its essence is already misogynist.
