Xinhua Net Reported China’s First Female Driver of Research Ship Crossing the Arctic Ocean——Ms. Bai Xiang’en from SMU

On September 24th, Xinhua Net reported China’s first female driver of research vessel crossing the Arctic Ocean, Ms. Bai Xiangen, a teacher from the Merchant Marine College of SMU.

From July 2012 to September 2012, the 5th Chinese scientific expedition team made an 89 days polar expedition journey by taking the research ship called Xuelong. On the invitation of Polar Research Institute of China, Ms. Bai Xiangen and Mr. Yang Shengfei from the Merchant Marine College of SMU served as the second mate and the third engineer during this journey. As one of the outstanding graduates of SMU, Ms.Bai Xiangen is not only the first female driver of research ship going across the Arctic Ocean but also the second female driver of research ship who ever board the ship Xuelong after Ms. Xie Jieying, who is also a teacher from SMU.
