Unremitting Self-Improvement Made Tang Xu A Fine Example of Young People

On January 8th, SMU held an awarding ceremony of Disabled College Students Encouragement Award sponsored by Bank of Communications for Mr. Tang Xu, an disabled student from College of Information Engineering of Shanghai Maritime University. The Disabled College Students Encouragement Awards was sponsored by Bank of Communications, and co-hosted by the China Disabled Person’s Federation, the Ministry of Education and so on. Only 10 college students won the high honor.

Recently Mr. Tang Xu was also elected as “Top 10 Shanghai College Students Touching Campus from 2006 to 2011” and “Top 10 Shanghai College Students 2011”.

Mr. Tang Xu was born in April, 1991, in Jiangsu province. He was diagnosed with severe Progressive Muscular Dystrophy at age 2m and could only move his right index finger slightly. He had to be confined to the armchair due to the disease. Born in a poverty-stricken family, Mr. Tang Xu does not lose his faith and yield to the cruel destiny. On the contrary, he has made strenuous efforts to pass the college entrance examination with excellent scores in 2011 and became a student majoring in Computer Science and Technology Department in the College of Information Engineering of SMU.

Since the beginning of Tang Xu’s college life, SMU has spared no efforts to help him in every possible way. A detailed plan has been made. Detailed and considerable arrangements have made in his daily life, including study guidance, psychological counseling, free health check, emergency handling and economic aid. College of Information Engineering also organized a volunteer team called “Sun-rise” to provide all-round service for Tang Xu. In Chinese characters, “Xu” means “the sun rises from the east”. Thus the title “Sun-rise” is full of best wishes to Tang Xu. The “Sun-rise” is currently consists of 32 volunteers and has been working since the day Tang Xu registered.

Cared by all the people around him, Tang Xu has made miracles one after another. He interprets the meaning and value of life. His spirits and life attitudes reveal the lofty outlook on life and values of the new time’s college students. He has set a good example of unremitting self-improvement and positive attitude which moved all the SMU teachers and students.
