From April 23 to 25, the Working Group on the Revision of IMO (International Maritime Organization) Maritime English Model Course held its first meeting in Shanghai International Shipping Service Center, which was jointly hosted by IMLA (International Maritime Lecturers Association) Shanghai Center and SMU.

Mr. Clive Cole, Secretary-general of IMLA and associate professor of WMU, Ms. Catherine Logie, responsible person of Maritime Training Agency for Marlins, Mr. Alexander Hickethier, Vice President of the Maritime College, INC, San Diego, Prof. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of IMLA and Vice President of SMU as well as over 10 experts from SMU and China Shipping Group attended the meeting.

The working group was mainly composed of teachers from Merchant Marine College and Foreign Languages College of SMU. In efforts to ensure the quality of this meeting, SMU teachers had done plenty of research and preparations, which was highly praised by experts.

The proposal of the “Revision of IMO Maritime English Model Course (HTW 1-3-7)”was drafted by SMU teachers, presenting to IMO through IMLA. IMO has classified HTW 1-3-7 as Priority one in the HTW1 Working Group Report, requiring the responsible party to submit revised draft in October of this year. In next February, the Second Session of the IMO Sub-committee of Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW 2) held in London will review this course.
