On June 17, General Electric China Co. LTD (GE China) and SMU jointly signed a donation agreement on Marine Electric Propulsion Lab Equipment at Conference Room 128, Administrative Building, SMU. China’s first Electric Propulsion & Automatic Control System Laboratory, which is co-founded by GE and SMU, was officially launched. Mr. Joe Mastrangelo, CEO of GE’s Power Conversion business, Mr. Liu Bo, president of GE’s Power Conversion business in China, Mr. Jean-Philippe Chaignot, Merchant Marine Leader of GE’s Power Conversion business, Prof. Huang Youfang, President of SMU, Prof. Yang Wanfeng, Vice President of SMU, and heads from relevant departments and colleges attended the ceremony. Prof. Yang Wanfeng hosted the ceremony.
Prof. Huang Youfang delivered a welcome speech. He said the development of universities is impossible without the care and support from the society, especially worldwide-known enterprises like GE. This donation from GE marked a new stage for bilateral collaboration. The two sides would have all-round cooperation in many fields such as talent cultivation, students training, lab construction, R&D programs, etc. SMU would give full play to its advantages in talent cultivation, faculty, discipline construction and scientific research innovation. Harnessing their respective advantages, SMU and GE will strive towards innovative and practical cooperative achievements, contributing to GE’s international competitiveness and SMU’s talent cultivation and scientific research innovation.
In his speech, Mr. Joe Mastrangelo said that China’s demand for environmental protection had led to great change in ship design and propulsion technology. GE’s innovative solution provided convenience for the transition of maritime industry to a high value-added domain. This program would not only promote the development of China’s marine ship industry but also promote GE’s development in China. He encouraged each side to join hands to build the world’s top laboratory in its field.
