On October 30th local time, SMU signed a cooperation agreement with SUMIS (Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping) in St. Petersburg, Russia. Prof. Huang Youfang, President of SMU, and Prof. Sergey Baryshnikov, President of SUMIS, signed the agreement on behalf of the two sides. According to the agreement, the two sides would cooperate on students’ cultivation and academic communication etc.
During his visit, Prof. Huang Youfang had a meeting with Prof. Sergey Baryshnikov. He said, “The littoral city of the Baltic Sea St. Petersburg is the largest harbor and second largest city of Russia, and Shanghai is the largest port city in the world which is now building the Free Zone and International Shipping Center, so both cities are full of development potential ready to be tapped”. He hoped the two sides would further cooperate on resource allocation and model innovation of maritime and shipping education.
SUMIS was organized in 2012 by merging of two famous higher educational institutions—the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy and the Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterway Communications, which is the oldest national transport university dated back to 1876. It consists of 7 colleges, including Navigation and Technology, Marine Engineering, Shipping Management, Shipbuilding, Shipping Economics etc. SUMIS is the first and the only higher education institution in Russia cultivating specialists in nuclear powered ship.
