The second International Symposium on Maritime Language Study and Application (ISMLSA-2) was held at SMU, 2-4 December 2016. Attended the meeting were Prof. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of SMU University Council and Chair of IMLA, Prof. Ye Xingguo, Chairman of Shanghai International Studies Association(SISA), Former Vice President of Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, and more than 70 experts and scholars from UK, Australia, Philippines, Republic of South Africa, etc.
Firstly, Prof. Jin Yongxing, on behalf of SMU and IMLA, delivered a speech and made congratulations to the symposium. He said that accurate and high-efficient communication was important guarantee for staff on the sea, ships, cargoes and environmental safety, and also was vital issue that IMO paid attention to. English, as common language that IMO set for people from different countries to communicate on the sea, played a critical role in maritime activities. Prof. Jin Yongxing briefly introduced the development history of SMU. SMU, as a higher education institution of hundred year’s history specialized in shipping achieved a series of pioneering work on domestic maritime language application.
Nearly 20 experts and scholars made statements. Experts who attended the meeting closely centered on discipline construction and talent cultivation, analyzed developing situation of international shipping, affirming the importance of establishment and construction of maritime language and application, highly admiring efforts that SMU made on setting doctoral program of maritime language and application, sharing experience that several universities’ construction of special subject and inter-discipline.
The second International Symposium on Maritime Language Study and Application (ISMLSA-2) was held by Shanghai International Studies Association and SMU, and undertaken by College of Foreign Language, SMU.
