On September 18th, the MTCC-Asia First Regional Workshop was held in Shanghai. More than 50 maritime, shipping and port management officers from over 20 countries, which included Japan, Korea, Singapore, Denmark, Cambodia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, Philippines, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China, etc, attended the one-week meeting.
Mr. Jose Matheickal, Deputy Director of Marine Environment Division, IMO, Mr. Anton Rhodes, Coordinator of the Global MTCC Network, IMO, Chen Xiaoguang, Director of Shanghai Combined Port Management Committee, Wang Zhijun, Deputy Director of Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, Jin Yongxing, Chairman of SMU Council and Director of MTCC-Asia as well as other related officials attended the opening ceremony. The meeting was hosted by Mr. Shixin, Vice President of SMU and Executive Director of MTCC-Asia.
The regional workshop aims to focus on issues including climate change, IMO environmental regulations, the reduction of harmful emissions from ships and energy efficiency management to promote ship energy-efficiency technologies and operations. Meanwhile, this workshop would present Asian countries China's technological development, system design, management experience and results in maritime energy saving and the reduction of harmful emissions. It would also demonstrate the main achievements China had made in fulfilling the international maritime conventions and implementing the project of energy saving and the reduction of harmful emissions from ships. It is dedicated to building an international platform for cooperation between China and other Asian maritime countries, exchanging maritime culture, making a win-win situation for China's and Asia’s maritime development, promoting and complementing each other. We hope this workshop could promote the implementation of "the Belt and Road" initiative in the international maritime sector and speed up Shanghai to become the leading city for implementing the initiative.
As one of the functional organizations of IMO, MTCC-Asia is responsible for conducting international maritime affairs under the leadership and support of IMO. This Asian Regional Workshop is one of the important parts of this year's work plan.
