On September 19th, Dr. Jose Matheicakal, Deputy Director of Marine Environment Division of IMO, visited SMU. Prof. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of SMU Council met with the guests.
Prof. Jin Yongxing extended his warm welcome to Dr. Jose Matheicakal. He said that as the organizer of the IMO's Maritime Technical Cooperation Center Asia (MTCC-Asia), SMU will go all out to support the development of the Center, and promote the Center to become the world's leading maritime technical cooperation platform.
Dr. Jose Matheickal congratulated SMU for its successful hosting of MTCC-Asia and expressed his appreciation for the progress made by the Center since its inception. He hoped MTCC-Asia could become a leader in the sustainable global maritime network.
On that day, Dr. Jose Matheickal gave a lecture entitled “IMO’s Global Strategy for Marine Environmental Protection” in the Lecture Hall of SMU. In his lecture, he focused on the issues of environmental protection at sea and briefed our teachers and students the impact of the maritime and shipping industry on the maritime environment. He also elaborated on the ways IMO would address for the challenges of maritime environment pollution through global technical cooperation projects.
