During September 18-21, Prof. Huang Youfang was invited to attend Smart Rivers Conference 2017 held in Pittsburgh in United States. The Conference was hosted by PIANC and organized by PIANC USA. Prof. Ge Yingen, Dean of College of Transport and Communications and Dr. Hu Jiankun from Logistics Research Center attended the meeting together.
During the Conference, Prof. Huang Youfang met with Mr. Jim McCarville, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Geert Van Cappellen, Secretary-General of PIANC and other two vice-presidents of PIANC. PIANC proposed that Shanghai Maritime Univeristy should bid for Smart Rivers Conference 2021. In this regard, President Huang Youfang said SMU is willing to actively strive for and will report to the Ministry of Transport and the relevant authorities in Shanghai, preparing the bid for Smart Rivers Conference 2021.
PIANC was established in 1885. It’s the oldest international shipping organization with its headquarter in Brussels and a membership of more than 60 countries.
Prof. Ge Yingen gave a keynote speech at the closing ceremony. In the speech, he introduced the current situation, development trend, challenges and countermeasures of the inland navigation in China.
On September 22, President Huang Youfang took part in the International Symposium on Transport Logistics and Regional Development at University of Manitoba, Canada. He delivered a speech at the opening ceremony and met with Mr. Blair C. Skinner, Mayor of Pinawa, Mr. Digvir S. Jayas, Vice President of the school and other related heads. During the talks with the heads of University of Manitoba, the two parties conducted in-depth exchanges on discipline arrangement, personnel training and international construction. They also reached a consensus on the cooperation in scientific research and personnel training.
This visit has further expanded the international influence of SMU and has demonstrated the new achievements we have gained, which is conducive to deepening the international cooperation between SMU and foreign academic institutions and universities.
