On July 11, a Global Forum on Green Shipping in Celebration of the International Maritime Organization’s 70th Anniversary was sponsored by SMU at the Shanghai International Conference Center. Over 100 maritime scholars from China and abroad assembled in Shanghai to discuss how to deal with challenges in the shipping industry and contribute to global green shipping development.
Kitack Lim, Secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, Zhang Xiaojie, Chairman of the International Maritime Organization Council and Acting Director General of the International Cooperation of the Ministry of Transport of China, Jin Yongxin, Chairman of the Shanghai Maritime University Council and Chairman of International Maritime Organization-Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre for Asia (MTCC-Asia), and other distinguished guests attended this forum.
Mr. Jin delivered a passionate welcome speech. He said that the 21st century is for the ocean.Now we are creating a shipping and marine civilization for the new era and calling for concerns and participation from the whole of society. So how to make more and more young people to care, love and devote themselves to the ocean is a profound question not only for SMU but for the International Maritime Lecturers Association.
Mr. Lim thanked Chinese government for great support towards IMO. “The mission of IMO is to devote itself to safe, green and high-efficient shipping. Environmental issues has always been the key work of IMO. China is one of the most influential members of IMO and has made active contributions to this organization.”
Shanghai Maritime University also composed a song named《Sailing to the Brighter Future》 and performed it at the opening ceremony. This song encouraged all teachers and students from global maritime education and training organizations to undertake mission and let more people to care and protect ocean.
