On November 1, 2013 Nobel Price winner in chemistry and vice-chairman of World Laureates Association Michael Levitt visited SMU. Professor Levitt brought us a marvelous speech and at the same time shared his scientific experiences and life lessons with students from universities and primary schools in Lingang.
Professor Levitt believed that the ultimate meaning for science was to seek for truth and improve living standards of human beings. Thus, a scientist must explore truth with the same meticulousness and perseverance as a detective.
Levitt said the reason why he came to SMU and give a speech was that he wanted to raise students’ interest in science and so to help China to train more scientists and engineers.
Professor Levitt held the opinion that it’s of primal importance to show public that scientist’s life can also be very enjoyable. He emphasized that happiness and curiosity were two magic keys of a scientist, and his life was far more than tedious as it seemed to be.
Many audiences were intensively impressed by professor Levitt’s speech and felt grateful to have the opportunity to learn lessons by sitting so near to the world-famous Nobel winner.
