On January 9, Li Qiang, Secretary of Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, visited the Maritime Technology Cooperation Center Asia (MTCC Asia) located in SMU. Li Qiang said that at present Shanghai is thoroughly implementing the important instructions of President Xi Jinping, accelerating the construction of “Five Centers”. He hopes that international organizations like MTCC Asia could be developed well as professional platforms and bridges to deepen cooperation and exchanges and gather global resources to help Shanghai accelerate the core competitiveness.
MTCC Asia is the first entity organization authorized by the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) to establish in China. It aims to support the improvement of maritime technology and personnel training of developing countries in Asia, and promote the technical research and standard formulation in energy conservation and emission reduction, green shipping and ship energy efficiency. Mr. Shi Xin, Vice President of SMU and the head of the Center, introduced the development history of the center and the works.
Li Qiang said that Shanghai has rich shipping resources, solid foundation and broad prospects. It is necessary to seize favorable conditions and grasp development opportunities to create a good environment for more shipping related international organizations to develop in Shanghai, continuously enhance the competitiveness of Shanghai International Shipping Center, and help Shanghai better participate in the international shipping governance.
As the first functional organization authorized by IMO to handle international maritime affairs in China and Asia, MTCC Asia was officially established in SMU on May 15, 2017. Over the past two years, MTCC Asia has done a lot of work to continuously improve China's influence in the international maritime field.
