On September 15th, the LMAA-SMU Serial Webinars on International Maritime Arbitration 2020 was held online. Mr. Shi Xin, Vice President of SMU, jointly with the delegates from School of Continuing Education attended the webinar.
Mr. Shi Xin and Mr. Bruce Harris, President of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) delivered speeches respectfully. Mr. Shi Xin expressed his warmest congratulations for the 60th anniversary of LMAA. He wished the webinars a great success and hoped that SMU and LMAA could extend more cooperation in the future.
This webinar is the third academic conference jointly organized by SMU and LMAA since 2018. In this special occasion of the 60th anniversary of LMAA, due to the pandemic, both sides decided to hold 3 webinars which would be held on September15th, 22nd and 29th. The webinars were supported by Shanghai Bar Association, Shanghai Arbitration Commission, Shanghai International Shipping Institute and World Maritime University Shanghai Center. Experienced maritime arbitrators and lawyers will be invited to express their opinions on some of the important issues that are currently the most concerned in the shipping industry, and conduct adequate communication and exchanges with the participants.
The theme of the first webinar is The Current Shipbuilding Issues. Mr. Ian Gaunt, the former President of LMAA, shared his view on the issues related to the assurance of the shipbuilder’s and buyer’s obligations under the shipbuilding contract. Mr. Andrew Stevens, a barrister from the 4 Pump Court explained why the recently judged case of Jiangsu Guoxin is of great significance to Chinese shipbuilding companies. Mr. Chris Kidd, the copartner of Ince, analyzed how to use shipbuilding contracts to control the impacts of the delays due to the Covid-19. The following two webinars will discuss the topics of "The Latest Development of Shipping Law" and "Practical Issues of Arbitration in 2020".
SMU will cooperate with the London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) for a long time to build a platform for in-depth exchanges and communication for the shipping industry, and make more contributions to the development of shipping, shipbuilding, ship finance and other industries.
