The 3rd Global Green Maritime Forum was held in SMU

On November 18th, the 3rd Global Green Maritime Forum was held in Shanghai Maritime University. Nearly one hundred guests and representatives from IMO and countries including Denmark, Sweden, Britain, Turkey, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the Philippines, Pakistan, and Laos participated in the forum. Prof. Lu Jing, President of SMU attended the ceremony and delivered a speech. Prof. Shi Xin, Vice President of SMU, presided over the forum.

Prof. Lu Jing expressed his heartfelt thanks and warmest welcome to the guests at home and abroad. He said that the development and prosperity of the global economy depend on multilateral cooperation among countries, and the highly internationalized shipping industry needs to promote global governance and win-win cooperation. Under the guidance of IMO, SMU and Maritime Technology Cooperation Center for Asia (MTCC Asia) hosted by her have completed a series of meaningful work in the transfer of technical achievements in ship energy efficiency and the improvement of energy efficiency, the capacity building of maritime personnel in Asian countries, the development of international maritime convention standards, and the implementation of IMO global shipping greenhouse gas emission reduction strategy. SMU will continue to work hard to build the center into an exchange and cooperation platform of shipping technology with wide influence in Asia and the world.

Mr. Anton Rhodes, Project Manager of Department of Partnerships and Projects of IMO, said that greenhouse gas reduction is an important agenda of the current work of IMO. IMO is making great efforts to navigate shipping into a low-carbon and zero-carbon future through working mechanisms such as MTCCs. He said that MTCC Asia has made positive contributions to the development of green shipping in Asia and the world in terms of transferring ship energy efficiency technology achievements, promoting the capacity building of maritime talents in Asian, and advancing the implementation of the IMO global shipping greenhouse gas emission reduction strategy.

Mr. Yang Xinzhai, Deputy Director General of China MSA, Mr. Andres Nordseth, Director General of Danish Maritime Authority, Mr. Shri. Srinivsa Prasad Anapu, Deputy Director General of Shipping, Government of India, Mr. Sittisak Choomura from Marine Department of Thailand, Ms. Jing Yan, Director of Shipping Office of Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission and Mr. Aykut I. ?l?er, professor of WMU, delivered online keynote speeches on topics related to the implementation experience of IMO greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies, key technologies for greenhouse gas emission reduction, and integrated research on de-carbonization in the international shipping industry.

Through a combination of online and onsite, the forum aims to provide a high-level, professional and international exchange platform for the global shipping community to discuss climate change challenges and coping strategies, promote the cooperation and exchange among the countries and regions alongside "Belt and Road", and advance the global shipping greenhouse gas emission reduction and green development.
