On the morning of July 23rd, the 19th Graduation Ceremony of the MSc Program in International Transport and Logistics (ITL) jointly run by Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) and World Maritime University (WMU) was held in Shanghai. Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., President of WMU, Seong-Hyeok Moon,Vice President of WMU, Chu Beiping, President of SMU and Shi Xin,Vice President of SMU attended the graduation ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Ruan Wei, Director of International Office and Dean of International Education College of SMU.
Chu Beiping extended heartfelt congratulations to the 22 students who received their master degrees from WMU, and expressed gratitude to the teachers and parents who attended the graduation ceremony. He emphasized the critical role of maritime education in ensuring shipping safety, reliability, efficiency and marine environmental protection. SMU values its collaboration with WMU. And over 20 years of development, this program has established a distinctive international educational profile. The curriculum closely aligns with the latest developments in international shipping and logistics, garnering widespread recognition in the global shipping community. SMU looks forward to expanding cooperation with WMU in more areas.
In his address, Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr. highlighted that as an academic and research institution under the International Maritime Organization (IMO), WMU is fostering leadership and innovation capabilities among graduate-level maritime professionals to promote sustainable development in the shipping industry. He encouraged graduates to embrace their responsibilities in the new era, apply their knowledge, and contribute to achieving significant goals such as achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. He expressed gratitude for SMU's continued commitment to the quality of cooperative projects and anticipated that graduates from this program would make substantial contributions to the international shipping and logistics industry.
Following this, Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr. and Chu Beiping jointly presented certificates to the graduates, while Seong-Hyeok Moon awarded certificates to one outstanding student and Shi Xin awarded certificates to three outstanding paper awardees.
Graduates of WMU are spread across more than 170 countries and regions globally. ITL program, in collaboration between SMU and WMU, has trained 579 master's graduates, including over 40 international students from countries such as the Netherlands, Australia, South Korea, and Ghana, who are employed widely in prominent domestic and international port and logistics-related enterprises. In May of this year, ITL program welcomed its 20th intake with a total of 35 new students.
