China-Singapore International Arbitration Experience Exchange Conference Held at SMU

To promote the development of the Shanghai International Commercial Arbitration Center and enhance the soft power of Shanghai's international shipping center, Shanghai Maritime University hosted the China-Singapore International Arbitration Exchange Conference on August 2 at the SITC International Report Hall. President Chu Beiping attended the conference, delivering both a welcome address and a concluding summary. The event was attended by over 40 participants, including representatives from the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Justice, Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, Pudong New Area Shipping Development Promotion Center, Hongkou District Investment Promotion Office (Shipping Division), Shanghai Arbitration Commission, East China University of Political Science and Law, Singapore’s Rajah & Tann experts, and SMU's faculty and students.

Chu Beiping highlighted the importance of Singapore's international arbitration development, new concepts, and government’s support for arbitration. The conference aimed to facilitate in-depth discussions among government departments, arbitration institutions, law firms, and universities on international arbitration issues and to offer recommendations for advancing the Shanghai International Commercial Arbitration Center.

The conference invited international arbitration experts, Toh Kian Sing, Senior Partner, and Yu Zheng, Partner, from Singapore’s Rajah & Tann. They shared their experiences with specific arbitration cases, considerations for arbitrator nominations, communication with arbitrators and opposing counsel, procedural application techniques, and the practical use of written statements, procedures, and briefs in Singaporean arbitration. They also analyzed common issues, experiences, and lessons for Chinese enterprises in international arbitration from the perspectives of document disclosure and witness performance, and offered corresponding recommendations.

During the interactive session, attendees delved into discussions on issues such as the late submission of arbitration materials, data export, the legal applicability of international arbitration, and arbitration costs. Representatives from Co-effort Law Firm LLP, SGLA Law Firm, JT&N (Shanghai) Law Firm, Weiis Law Firm, and other related units, as well as heads of SMU’s International Office, International Education College, and School of Law also participated in the conference.
