The 13th International Conference on Logistics and Maritime Systems (LOGMS) 2025 Held at Shanghai Maritime University

From August 26 to 29, 2025, the 13th International Conference on Logistics and Maritime Systems (LOGMS) was held at Lingang Campus, Shanghai Maritime University. The event was hosted by Shanghai Maritime University and organized by the Institute of Logistics Science and Engineering of the university.

Over 120 experts, scholars and industry representatives from various countries, including China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, the Netherlands, Germany, Nigeria, and Australia, attended the conference. The attendees included Professor Yan Wei, Vice President of Shanghai Maritime University; Professor Rommert Dekker, Chair of the LOGMS Committee from Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Professor Ge Ying'en, Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Research Part D from Chang'an University; Professor Chen Junxian, Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Engineering Informatics from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; Professor Paul Tae-Woo Lee from Ocean College, Zhejiang University; Professor Xu Zhou, Vice Editor-in-Chief of Operations Research from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Professor Stefan Voss from Hamburg University, Germany; Professor Mitsuo Gen from Tokyo University of Science, Japan; Professor Hyerim Bae from Busan National University, South Korea; Dr. Li Haobin from National University of Singapore; and Dr. Fu Xiuju, Senior Researcher at the Institute of High Performance Computing, Singapore, among others.

During the opening ceremony, Professor Yan Wei, Vice President of Shanghai Maritime University, delivered a speech on behalf of the organizing committee. He emphasized that modern logistics serves as a crucial link in the global economy, supporting the efficient operation of international trade and supply chains. He also highlighted that building smarter, greener, and more collaborative logistics and maritime systems is a key challenge for promoting high-quality industry development. Since its inception in 2005, the LOGMS conference has become an important platform for academic exchange in the fields of maritime and logistics systems. This year marks the second time Shanghai Maritime University has hosted the event in 17 years, drawing widespread participation and engagement from universities, research institutions, and industry enterprises both domestically and internationally. Professor Rommert Dekker, Chair of the LOGMS Committee, expressed his hopes for the conference’s successful outcomes and for further advancing international logistics and maritime systems development. Professor Liang Chengji, Executive Chair of the conference and Director of the Institute of Logistics Science and Engineering of Shanghai Maritime University, introduced the organization of the conference.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Sustainable Development of Maritime Logistics Systems: Green, Smart, Multimodal Transport, and Port-City Synergy.” The conference featured 20 keynote sessions and 60 academic presentations. Over 20 renowned global experts were invited to deliver keynote speeches on frontier topics such as green transformation, smart applications, digital twins, integrated multimodal transport, and port-city collaborative development. In-depth discussions were held across these topics. Academic presentations covered areas such as port safety and monitoring, vessel traffic and scheduling, yard optimization, automated terminal operations, innovative port policies, machine learning applications, and port energy strategies. The conference also included a rigorous anonymous review and on-site defense process, which resulted in the selection of four outstanding papers and one best paper. The event provided a high-level international platform for participants to share insights, spark innovative ideas, and establish collaborative links, contributing to the intelligent, green, and systematic development of maritime logistics. The research findings presented by experts and scholars showcased the latest progress in the field of international logistics and maritime systems, as well as new opportunities for future international cooperation and integration of industry, academia, and research.

At the closing ceremony, Professor Sun Shibin, Director of the Institute of Logistics Science and Engineering, delivered a speech. He stated that the conference had injected new momentum into the sustainable development of maritime logistics systems, and expressed hope for further strengthening research and cooperation in areas such as green low-carbon logistics, smart logistics, multimodal transport, and port-city synergy. Professor Rommert Dekker, Chair of the LOGMS Committee, gave a speech on behalf of the conference organizing committee, highly praising the successful organization of the event. During the closing ceremony, an award ceremony for outstanding papers was also held.

During the conference, participants visited the Underground Logistics Technology Research Center and the Smart Port and Maritime Logistics Research Center (Shanghai Maritime University Technology Transfer Company) at Shanghai Maritime University. They also toured the Yangshan Phase IV automated terminal and the Di Shui Lake AI Innovation Port Exhibition Hall, gaining a close look at the latest achievements in China’s smart port construction and artificial intelligence innovation. These visits provided important insights into further promoting the integration of industry, academia, and research, as well as practical exploration.

Since its inception, the LOGMS conference has been dedicated to promoting academic exchange and industry collaboration in international logistics and maritime systems. This year's conference achieved fruitful results in terms of intellectual exchange, expansion of cooperation, and sharing of practical experiences. It will further promote the coordinated development of global maritime logistics and contribute new wisdom and strength to Shanghai’s goal of becoming a world-class international shipping center.
