On September 16, during the 12th London International Shipping Week (LISW2025), China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited and the China Classification Society (CCS) jointly hosted a thematic forum titled “Green and Intelligent Solutions for a Safe, Sustainable, and Efficient Shipping Industry.”
The event was attended by Wang Qi, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom; Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO); Zhu Bixin, Director of the Board of COSCO Shipping; and Zhao Yan, President of the China Classification Society, all of whom delivered remarks. President Chu Beiping also attended the forum and delivered a keynote speech entitled “Embracing Change, Strengthening International Cooperation, and Advancing Shipping Services to Support Global Economic Growth.”
In his keynote speech, President Chu emphasized that digitalization, artificial intelligence, and green development have become new driving forces for ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime transport. Faced with both significant challenges and opportunities, maritime universities bear an irreplaceable responsibility. He stated that Shanghai Maritime University remains committed to a global perspective, focusing on cultivating maritime professionals and advancing maritime science and technology services to comprehensively promote the development of the international shipping industry. In terms of digital transformation, the university has been deepening education reform to nurture versatile professionals who are not only proficient in maritime operations but also possess strong digital skills, sustainability awareness, and a global outlook. The university is building a “Cloud Maritime University” to set new benchmarks for educational development and explore innovative pathways for digital education. In the field of green shipping, the university actively participates in IMO’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction initiatives, supports the implementation of IMO’s decarbonization measures, and provides technical assistance for the Shanghai–Los Angeles Green Shipping Corridor. It has also launched a series of international capacity-building projects in green shipping.
The 12th London International Shipping Week (LISW2025) officially opened on September 15, 2025, along the River Thames in London. Supported by the UK Department for Transport, the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UK Chamber of Shipping, and Maritime London, the event brought together global policymakers, business leaders, and experts to discuss the industry’s key challenges and future trends.
During the event, President Chu Beiping signed a cooperation agreement with Johannah Christensen, CEO of the Global Maritime Forum (GMF), and held meetings with leaders of various international shipping organizations and institutions. He also visited and extended his greetings to three students from the university currently interning at the International Chamber of Shipping headquarters.
Leaders from the International Office, the Merchant Marine College, and the Law School accompanied President Chu during the forum.
