Application Guide                       

Program Length: 3 years.

Tuition: RMB 29000 per year.

Application deadline:

Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS): April 15, 2022

Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS): April 30, 2022

Self-financed Applicants: April 30, 2022

Term starts each year in September (The exact date will be written on the Admission Letter).


Eligibility:

Chinese-taught programs: Master or above, healthy foreigners, HSK 5 holders.

English-taught programs: Master or above, healthy foreigners, IELTS 6.0/ TOFEL 80/ Cambridge English B2 (or above) certificate received within the recent two years.

Chinese citizens who apply to study abroad as an international student after they have immigrated to a foreign country must hold a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for four years or more. Applicants should provide proof of residence abroad for more than two years.

1. Application Form

Scholarship applicants (thus, CGS and SGS students) should apply using the online application portal (for SGS visit http://edu.sh.gov.cn/study_cn/; CGS visithttps://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn/); self-sponsored applicants can also apply using SMU application form which can be download here (SMU application form);

2. Self-introduction Video

The video does not exceed 5 minutes, and the content includes your personality, hobbies, high school performance and rewards, and others in the same language as the major you are applying for.

3. Degree Certificate or Official Proof of Expected Graduation

The degree certificate must be in Chinese or English with official school stamps or a notarized version by the embassy in Chinese or English;

4. Relevant Transcripts

Transcripts must be in Chinese or English with official school stamps or a notarized version by the embassy in Chinese or English;

5. Two Recommendation Letters from Professors

Written by Associate Professors/ Professors in Chinese or English;

6. Language Credentials

For Chinese-taught program: HSK 5 certificate

    Exemption of English Proficiency Certificate:

    (1) Native Chinese speakers;

    (2) Applicants whose previous degree program was taught in Chinese;

For English-taught program: IELTS 6.0/ TOFEL 80/ Cambridge English B2 (or above) certificate received within the recent two years.

Other internationally recognized English proficiency tests with scores of the same level and provide proof of certificates.

    Exemption of English Proficiency Certificate:

    (1) Native English speakers;

    (2) Applicants whose previous degree program was taught in English;

    (3) Other equivalent English proficiency certificates (must be reviewed and approved by SMU);

7. Study Statement

Around 1500 words for doctor ’s degree candidates. Topics to cover: study and work experience, academic research results, planned research proposals, and personal development objectives after graduation;

8. Catalogue and Abstracts of Published Papers

As well as other documents that can prove academic ability;

9. Copy of Passport Bio-data

The page with your biographical data (name, date of birth, passport number, expiration date, place of issue, and passport type information) and passport-sized photo;

10. Medical Examination Report

11. Certificate of No Criminal Conviction

Application Method:  

Self-financing programs

1. International students applying as a self-financing applicant should click here to download SMU application form.

2. After completing all application requirements, send the documents to this mailbox: smu_iec@163.com.

3. A preliminary review will be conducted on all documents.

4. Applicants who passed the preliminary review will receive a notice ofpreliminary interview.

5. Applicants who passed the preliminary interview will then be interviewed by the respective college they applied to study in.

6. Students who pass the second interviewwill receive aadmission notice.


Scholarship programs

1. Students applying for scholarship programs must first apply using the online application portal through the following mode of application: CSC website (https://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn), SGS website (http://study.edu.sh.gov.cn/).

2. After completing the online application, the applicant must download and sign the form.

3. A preliminary review will be conducted on all documents.

4. Applicants who passed the preliminary review will receive a notice ofpreliminary interview.

5. Applicants who passed the preliminary interview will then be interviewed by the respective college they applied to study in.

6. Students who pass the second interviewwill receive a pre-admission notice.

7. Students will be notified of their scholarship status in late May. CGS Scholarship applicants will be notified of their scholarship statusin accordance with the requirements of CSC.
